Get to know Rob Galvin, Process Engineering Team Lead!

Question: When did you join Baylis?
A: I joined Baylis in August 2016—one month after arriving in Canada!

Q: What prompted you to move to Canada?
A: My friends and I always said we would travel after college. After a few years of work, we wanted to move abroad. Pat McHugh (Baylis Senior Process Engineer) had gotten a job at Baylis so that’s what brought us to Toronto. Pat and his wife, Ruth Mullaney (Baylis Quality Engineer), her significant other and I all lived together downtown Toronto for the first two years here! It was a full house!

Q: Where did you work and what was your role prior to joining Baylis?
A: I started as a WorkFace Planner and moved into a project engineering role after a few months. Afterwards, I moved to a new company and worked as a Manufacturing Engineer.

Q: Where did you go to school?
A: I attended Secondary School at Bantry, West Cork in Ireland. Afterwards I went to University of Limerick for Mechanical Engineering and then completed my Masters via distance learning from Brunel University in London.

Q: What is your day-to-day role at Baylis?

A: As a Process Engineer I’m responsible for ensuring we can meet the demand of our customers. I enjoy working with different teams and various in-house equipment to determine how we can improve our processes and the devices we make. We regularly collaborate with a combination of Quality, Production, Supply Chain, Equipment Engineering and R&D to solve any issues that may arise; we are always working to improve the processes of our Production Line in order to ensure all physicians have our device on-hand when needed.

My team works with all areas of the business, ranging from raw material, processing and inspections, to how we ship and package devices—anything required to ensure we can meet current and future demand for our devices.

Q: What is it about Baylis and its mandate that motivates you to come to work every day?
A: Coming to work with the people here makes it easy to do. I find the culture, which is fueled by the people, very motivating. We have a great mission statement and vision to get behind. If you look at our core values, it’s not difficult to be inspired to do your best work. Baylis offers plenty of opportunities for growth and development as well as challenges to continuously push yourself forward.

Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A: I do quite a few things. I watch Netflix, read a lot of management and personal development books and sing my heart out to Broadway show tunes (especially Meatloaf). I keep my mind and my body healthy by going to the gym a few times a week. Once a week, I’ll call my mom in Ireland to catch up and see how she’s doing. The rest of my time is spent thinking about our devices.
