Spotlight on Diane Renaud

May 23, 2019

Get to know Diane Renaud, our Assistant Controller from our Montreal team!

Question: When did you join Baylis?
Answer: I joined Baylis in June 2015.

Q: Where did you work and what was your role prior to joining Baylis?
A: I worked as a Controller for eight years at a flooring distribution company that sold goods to major home hardware stores across Canada. The company, like Baylis, was growing quickly. I worked with the owner to create an accounting department. I had an amazing time there and learned a lot. Once it was time for me to pursue a new challenge, I applied to Baylis Medical.

Q: What is your day-to-day role at Baylis?
A: Accounting includes many different aspects. Certain aspects of control occur periodically such as the verification of cheques and other payments, following foreign currencies, and preparing and auditing our financial reports.

Although my day-to-day changes, everything I do helps my team look after the financial health of the company. Our work allows us to have an overall view of Baylis. It gives us an insight into the workings of different departments of the company such as production, distribution, payroll and human resources to name a few. Accounting develops our team work so we can continually help improve our processes.

Q: What is it about Baylis and its mandate that motivates you to come to work every day?
A: I have always been inspired by the mission of the company: Improving the Lives of the People Around the World. Being a part of the mission changed my perspective of my role. I’m no longer just doing accounting—all of my efforts in combination with the efforts of my colleagues are having a real impact on people’s lives.

I am also inspired by the fact that Baylis Medical was founded by a woman, Mrs. Gloria Baylis, during a time when it was being realized that women were having a growing presence in the workforce. In the late 80’s when Baylis was founded, it wasn’t very common to see a female entrepreneur. Knowing that Mrs. Baylis achieved so much in her lifetime inspires me to do the same.

I remember telling Frank Baylis (Chairman of the Board), “I’m not certain I’ll get the job, but I just wanted to say bravo and congratulate you for the direction in which you’re taking the company and honouring your mother’s legacy.”

Baylis has grown so much since I first started and I’m proud to be a member of the team.

Q: What do you do in your spare time? A: I have more time for myself now that my children have grown to become two amazing, young adults—I enjoy a good spin class, reading everything there is to know about vegetables and searching for new recipes. For me, food is not just for eating, it is an expérience. It is meant to be shared with family and friends. When I’m not in the kitchen preparing a meal for my family, I am working to continually improve my leadership skills.
