First Case Report to Describe Non-fluoroscopic Transseptal Puncture in Complex Anatomy

A report recently published in HeartRhythm Case Reports is the first to describe a technique for achieving transseptal access without the use of fluoroscopy in complex anatomy, enabling an entirely fluoroless catheter ablation procedure.
With growing understanding of health risks associated with radiation exposure and orthopedic issues resulting from wear of heavy protective equipment, emphasis should be placed on reducing use of fluoroscopy in cardiac procedures. Catherization labs seeking to limit the use of fluoroscopy typically continue to use it for transseptal access due to limited clinical literature on achieving a non-fluoroscopic transseptal puncture.
As evidenced in this case report, entirely fluoroless transseptal procedures can be successfully achieved, even in complex anatomy.
