Get to know Jeff Arnett, one of our Senior Principal Research and Development Engineers!
Question: When did you join Baylis?
Answer: I started working at Baylis a little over two years ago, but I’ve known Baylis/Anchor since 2010.
Q: Where did you work and what was your role prior to joining Baylis?
A: I worked at an engineering consulting company as a principal engineer. That’s how I met the Baylis Medical team. I helped design the Anchor Orthopedics AnchorKnot® Tissue Approximation Kit.
Q: What is your day-to-day role at Baylis?
A: I help engineer our devices in the pipeline. I look for what can go wrong to help reduce risks, and the quality of the design to ensure the device is the best it can be. Because I’m based out of my home in the U.S., a lot of my interaction with my colleagues is done through email and Webex. I work with different teams and have a hand in many different projects. I’ve been around for a while so I leverage my expertise to help the younger engineers at work.
Q: What is it about Baylis and its mandate that motivates you to come to work every day?
A: I have had a long career and I have seen many things during my time with other companies. I have always enjoyed working in the medical industry because you know that your work helps people, but Baylis in particular has a better why. Here, our focus is the patient — making the right devices that physicians need to successfully treat patients and making those devices the best we possibly can. We do things here for the right reason.
Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A: Dog Agility. It is the number one thing, apart from wood working. Agility is a sport where a dog runs an obstacle course based on directions given by their handler.
I first became a dog person 20 years ago when my wife brought one home. I didn’t know what to do with a dog apart from train one, so that’s what I did. With Agility, you can train your dog to do more than simply sit and roll over. You yourself have to become better about handling and communicating the course to the dog so that they can complete the course as quickly as they can.
There are a lot of different aspects of Agility that I really like — like the competition. My first dog, Lexi, is a rescue dog and two-time National Champion in the U.S. A video of Lexi winning her first national championship is available on YouTube (https://youtu.be/tJ2cp-moOHw). We competed in Germany for the European Open as a part of Team USA. What we have accomplished is amazing for a first Agility dog.
Speed round:
Favourite colour? Blue because that’s the colour of first place.
Favourite snack? Homemade chocolate chip cookies.
What’s the last show you binge-watched? Blue Bloods. It’s the only show I’ve every binge-watched.
What is/would be your go-to karaoke song? Keep Your Hands to Yourself by Georgia’s Satellites
If you could go back in time to witness one event in the past, what would it be? The moon landing.
What do you like on your pizza? Extra sauce, a lot of meat, mushrooms, onions and Mike’s hot honey sauce — but you have to go to MOD Pizza for that.
Who inspires you? Silvia Trkman because she’s excellent at Agility.
What’s the best meal you’ve ever had? Shrimp Shack in Kauai, Hawaii.
Where is your dream destination? Mount Rushmore.
Secret talent no one knows about? I was a great bowler. I’ve bowled four 300’s (a perfect game).
What did you dream of becoming when you were a child? A professional bowler.
