Employee Health and Fitness with Deb Douma, Vice President of Human Resources

Mai 09, 2019

Each year during the month of May, employers and employees show their support for well-being and leading a healthy lifestyle in the workplace by observing Global Employee Health and Fitness Month.

Deb Douma, Vice President of Human Resources, shares why Baylis Medical is dedicated to looking after their employees and the different ways the organization promotes well-being in the workplace.

In what ways does Baylis support the health and well-being of its employees?

Employee well-being is a top priority for us as a company. That means providing ways for employees to improve and sustain their mental, physical and social well-being. We are fortunate to have employees who not only take advantage of what’s offered to them by the company, such as the on-site gym, but who take their well-being and the well-being of their peers into their own hands. There are many employee-led initiatives and clubs such as yoga and boot camp classes held in our gym, meditation and mindfulness practice, Gym Nights, Baylis Board Games and Pot Luck Club. We’re happy to support these initiatives because it all plays into employee well-being.

To further support our employees, we enable them to choose how the spending account provided as part of our benefits package is allocated, between a Health Spending Account (HSA) and Lifestyle Spending Account (LSA). While yoga and boot camp classes are available on-site, we appreciate that some employees would prefer memberships to outside gyms and studios. An LSA helps cover the costs for these memberships as well as any health and wellness tools employees may need to succeed, such as athletic gear and mindfulness apps.

Baylis offers their employees a diverse range of health benefits. From an employer’s point of view, how do you determine the benefits you offer to employees?

At Baylis, we understand that needs vary between all of our employees. For our employees in Canada, we offer three tiers of a health benefits plan that they can choose from. As Baylis continues to grow, needs and wants continue to change as well. We work towards aligning the benefits we offer with what employees have told us they want. From time to time, we adjust our offering based on usage data, plan experience and employee feedback.

To further help our employees access their benefits, we introduced a platform which holds digital details of the employees’ benefits and provides many additional features that support the whole person, from a health and well-being perspective. This platform provides immediate access to both medical and mental health concierges and a variety of wellness-related information, challenges and services. We feel that it’s important for our employees to have access to these resources.

How important is the health of employees to the organization?

Our employees do excellent work every day that touches the lives of people around the world. They are our most important asset, and we could not do what we do without them.

Their overall well-being is immensely important to us which is why, as an organization, we invest in our employees so much so that Employee Development is one of our Core Values—we want everyone on our team to thrive and grow both personally and professionally. We are committed to helping our employees succeed at leading a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
